The HARS engine workshop team today celebrated a long awaited milestone with the completion of the very first engine cylinder refurbishment from their new Albion Park facilities. The engine workshop facilities were transferred from the HARS Port Kembla base in October of 2008. Over 27 semi-trailer loads of engine components, equipment and spares were transported to their new home at Albion Park.
“It’s a great achievement and fantastic to see the results after such a lengthy and time consuming move. It demonstrates our capabilities in maintaining flying operations well into the future.”, Kevin Taylor – Engine Workshop Manager.
Engine workshop members Glen Green and Graham Smith were on hand to explain the process. Each cylinder undergoes a process of non-destructive testing, physical inspection, measurement, honing of the bore, seating, facing and lapping of the valves and completed with pressure testing. The first cylinder is one of a planned 28 to be refurbished to be used to support future Lockheed Super Constellation operations.
