History of HARS Aircraft
VH-SYS is a rare and historically significant aircraft preserved by the HARS Volunteers at Albion Park, New South Wales.
Originally built in 1962 as a military aircraft for the Royal Malaysian Air Force (serial FM1066), it later came to Australia in 1972. Although intended for agricultural conversion, it instead spent time in storage before being restored and registered as VH-EVB.
During the 1980s and 1990s, the aircraft operated in civilian service, conducting joy flights and scenic tours, particularly on the Gold Coast.
The aircraft was saved from likely scrapping around 2007 by aviation enthusiast Sy Allsep, who moved it to Wedderburn for restoration. Following his death in 2015, volunteers continued to maintain and operate the aircraft in his memory.
In March 2017, it was re-registered VH-SYS in his honour. The aircraft was transferred to HARS in July 2022 and remains under restoration, with the aim of returning it to flying condition. A significant milestone was achieved in December 2024 when the aircraft was successfully taxied for the first time at Albion Park.
Today, VH-SYS is one of the very few surviving airworthy examples of its type worldwide.
History of Type
The Scottish Twin Pioneer was developed by Scottish Aviation as a rugged short take-off and landing (STOL) utility aircraft.
First flown in 1955, it was specifically designed to operate from short, rough, or unprepared airstrips, making it ideal for remote operations. The aircraft could carry passengers, cargo, or be adapted for a variety of roles including military transport and civil operations.
Its exceptional STOL performance made it particularly useful in regions with limited aviation infrastructure, including jungle, desert, and mountainous environments.

Military Service
The Twin Pioneer saw extensive military use, particularly in transport and support roles. VH-SYS itself served with the Royal Malaysian Air Force, where it operated as a utility transport aircraft.
